Health, Illness, and Treatment According to Ayurveda

HomeWhat is Ayurveda?Health, Illness, and Treatment According to Ayurveda

Health

Health is the balance and harmony between our internal (mind-body-spirit) and external (nature) environments.

According to Ayurveda, no disease can be purely physical or psychological in nature. Physical ailments can affect the spirit, while mental illnesses can affect the body. Therefore, body and mind are a whole and cannot be considered separately for treatment.

Underlying all diseases is ignorance and the processing of incorrect or distorted information; our lack of knowledge about our life functions. When we are in harmony and balance internally and externally, all our functions return to us.

Ayurveda deals with eight branches of medicine:

Pediatrics
Gynecology
Obstetrics
Ophthalmology
Geriatrics (internal medicine + elderly care)
Ear, Nose, and Throat
General Surgery

Each of these medical specialties is approached according to the five element theory (space, air, fire, water, earth), the tridosha or three bodily fluids (Vata-Pita-Kapha), and the trinity of life (body-mind-spiritual awareness).

“Sama dosha sam agnisca

Sama dhatu mala kriya

Prasabbatmendriya manah

Svastha ity abhidiyate”

(Sushruta Samihita 15.38)

A person is called a “healthy person” if their doshas are balanced, their appetite and digestion are good, their tissues function normally, their waste products are balanced, and their consciousness, mind, and senses are in a state of happiness/ecstasy (rapture), and they know themselves and are centered.

Svastha: Perfect health achieved after a person knows themselves and finds their center (healthy ego/self-esteem and healthy higher self, high spiritual awareness/connection with God).

Health is NOT the absence of disease; it is the dynamic balance of our complex mind-body-spirit integrity and a continuous process.

THE THEORY OF FIVE ELEMENTS

Space/Void (Akasha):

It is the void between matter. Void connects everything and everything exists within it. It is so subtle that our senses cannot perceive it, but we know it is there. Akasha is the fabric upon which all existence is built. In the body, Akasha is all the holes and empty spaces; in the mind, it is consciousness.

Air (Vayu):

Air is the force behind all movement. Wind is the physical manifestation of air. Vayu is the force that moves nerve signals, breath, and the movement of limbs in the body; and in the mind, it is the force that moves thoughts.

Fire (Tejas):

Fire is light, heat, and transformation. In the body, it governs digestion and metabolism; in the mind, it governs mental perception and understanding.

Water (Apas):

Water is the idea of flow and fluidity. It represents the liquid state of matter. In the body, it represents fluids, moisture, and cohesion; in the mind, it represents gentle, passionate emotions and love.

Earth (Prithvi):

Earth represents stability and firmness. In the body, it represents our physical structure or form, our muscles and bones; in the mind, it represents mental consistency.

ELEMENTS AND FOODS

Soil: Seeds and nuts, legumes, grains, mushrooms, root vegetables, meat.

Water: Milk and dairy products, juicy fruits (watermelon, grapes, peaches), juicy vegetables (cucumber,

tomato, zucchini)

Fire: Spices such as chili flakes, black pepper, ginger, cinnamon, cloves; sour fruits such as lemon, pineapple, grapefruit; alcohol and tobacco

Air: Dried fruits; raw vegetables; rough vegetables such as broccoli, cabbage, sprouts;
